Finding Optimal Solutions to Sokoban Using Instance Dependent Pattern Databases

چکیده
Pattern databases have been successfully applied to several problems. Their use assumes that the goal state is known, and once the pattern database is built, commonly it can be used by all instances. However, in Sokoban, before solving the puzzle, the goal position of each stone is unknown. Moreover, each Sokoban instance has its own state space search. In this paper we apply pattern databases to Sokoban. The proposed approach uses an instance decomposition, that allows multiple possible goal states to be abstracted into a single state. Thus, an instance dependent pattern database is employed. Experiments with the standard set of instances show that the proposed approach overcomes the current best lower bounds in initial states for several instances. Furthermore, three of these new best lower bounds match exactly with the optimal solution length. Finally, we run experiments of 5 million explored states for each instance. Nine instances were solved with optimality guarantees, while only four instances were solved under the same conditions by pre-

Improved Heuristic and Tie-Breaking for Optimally Solving Sokoban
We present a novel admissible pattern database heuristic (D) and tie-breaking rule (L) for Sokoban, allowing us to increase the number of optimally solved standard Sokoban instances from 20 to 28 and the number of proved optimal solutions from 25 to 32 compared to previous methods. The previously best heuristic for Sokoban (I) used the idea of an intermediate goal state to enable the effective ...
متن کاملSolving Motion Planning Problems
This work considers a family of motion planning problems with movable blocks. Such problem is defined by a maze grid occupied by immovable blocks (walls) and free squares. There are k movable blocks (stones) and k fixed goal squares. The man is a movable block that can traverse free squares and move stones between them. The problem goal is to move the stones from their initial positions to the ...
متن کاملCompressing Pattern Databases
A pattern database is a heuristic function stored as a lookup table which stores the lengths of optimal solutions for instances of subproblems. All previous pattern databases had a distinct entry in the table for each subproblem instance. In this paper we investigate compressing pattern databases by merging several adjacent entries into one, thereby allowing the use of pattern databases that ex...
متن کاملA full ranking method using integrated DEA models and its application to modify GA for finding Pareto optimal solution of MOP problem
This paper uses integrated Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models to rank all extreme and non-extreme efficient Decision Making Units (DMUs) and then applies integrated DEA ranking method as a criterion to modify Genetic Algorithm (GA) for finding Pareto optimal solutions of a Multi Objective Programming (MOP) problem. The researchers have used ranking method as a shortcut way to modify GA to d...
متن کاملDomain-Dependent Single-Agent Search Enhancements
Al research has developed an extensive collect ion of methods to solve state-space problems. Using the challenging domain of Sokoban, this paper studies the effect of search enhancements on program performance. We show that the current state of the ar t in AT generally requires a large p rog ramming and research effort into domain-dependent: methods to solve even moderately complex problems in ...
